Biotin Deficiency Risk Rises Among Pregnant Women

Biotin, or vitamin B7, helps convert food into energy, and low levels may affect hair, nails and fatigue, with pregnant women at higher risk.

Hair fall, tiredness and brittle nails are easy to blame on stress. In many Indian homes, that is the default diagnosis.

But sometimes the body is making a quieter complaint. It may be asking for biotin, a B vitamin that helps turn food into usable energy.

The National Institutes of Health says around three in ten pregnant women may run low on biotin. That matters because pregnancy already pushes the body hard.

Why biotin matters daily

Biotin is also called vitamin B7. It is a water-soluble vitamin, which means the body does not store much of it.

That is why regular intake through food matters. Your body uses biotin to process carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Think of it as a helper in the kitchen of the body. It does not become energy by itself. It helps enzymes do that job.

Those enzymes break food into smaller parts. Carbohydrates become glucose. Fats become fatty acids. Proteins become amino acids.

Cells then use these pieces to make energy. Without enough biotin, that process can become less efficient.

Biotin also supports hair, skin and nails. This is why the supplement market sells it so aggressively.

But there is a catch. Hair fall has many causes. Low iron, thyroid problems, stress, illness and hormones can all play a role.

So, biotin is not a magic tablet for every hair problem. It helps when deficiency is part of the problem.

Signs people often ignore

Biotin deficiency can be tricky because its signs look ordinary. Hair fall, skin rashes and tiredness rarely send people running to a doctor.

Many people first change shampoo, buy a skin cream, or blame office stress. That is understandable, but it can delay proper care.

Weak nails are another clue. Nails may split, chip or break more often than usual.

Some people may feel unusual weakness. Others may notice tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.

Mood changes can also appear in some cases. That does not mean every low mood points to biotin deficiency.

The nervous system needs several nutrients to work well. Biotin is one part of that larger picture.

Doctors usually look at the whole person. Diet, medicines, gut health, pregnancy and blood tests all matter.

This is where self-diagnosis becomes risky. A vitamin shortage and a thyroid disorder can look similar from outside.

A person losing hair quickly should not simply order supplements online. They need a proper assessment, especially if other symptoms are present.

Who faces higher risk

Most healthy adults need about 30 micrograms of biotin a day. Breastfeeding women may need around 35 micrograms.

Many people can get this from food. Nuts, seeds, peanuts, walnuts, almonds and sunflower seeds are useful options.

Eggs, legumes and some whole foods also contribute. A balanced Indian diet can usually cover the basics.

The risk rises when the diet stays poor for long. Crash diets and very restricted eating can quietly create gaps.

Gut problems can also interfere. If the intestines do not absorb nutrients well, eating enough may still not solve the issue.

Long antibiotic use can add another layer. Antibiotics can reduce healthy gut bacteria, which help produce some biotin.

This does not mean people should avoid prescribed antibiotics. It means long courses need medical supervision.

Raw egg whites carry a separate concern. They contain a protein called avidin, which binds biotin in the gut.

When that happens, the body absorbs less biotin. Cooking eggs reduces this problem.

Pregnancy deserves special attention. The body uses nutrients faster during fetal development, and needs can shift quickly.

For pregnant women, the answer is not random high-dose pills. It is steady prenatal care, sensible food and doctor-guided supplements.

Supplements need caution

Biotin supplements look harmless because the vitamin dissolves in water. Extra amounts usually leave the body through urine.

But “usually safe” does not mean “take as much as you like.” High doses can create real confusion in blood tests.

The NIH has warned that excess biotin can interfere with some lab results. Thyroid tests are a common example.

That can mislead doctors. A wrong report can lead to worry, extra tests, or even wrong treatment decisions.

This is especially important for people already taking thyroid medicines. It also matters before heart, hormone or pregnancy-related tests.

Anyone taking biotin should tell the doctor before blood work. That small detail can save a lot of confusion.

For most people, food should come first. Supplements make sense when a doctor suspects deficiency or sees a clear medical reason.

The dose also matters. Some people may need only modest amounts. Others may need targeted treatment after tests.

Taking multiple supplements can also add up quietly. A multivitamin, hair tablet and “skin glow” capsule may all contain biotin.

That is how a casual wellness habit becomes an unnecessary overdose. The label matters, not just the brand promise.

The bigger lesson is simple. Hair, skin and nails reflect the body’s general health, not just one vitamin.

If hair fall rises suddenly, skin rashes worsen, nails keep breaking, or fatigue feels unusual, speak to a doctor. Biotin may be part of the story, but the real job is to find the whole story before the body has to shout louder.
